Halloween

So my brother, Gianni, and his girlfriend, Brooke, wanted to do a door decorating contest for Halloween and well...I'm going to be honest here. I think they kicked my butt because theirs looked awesome. BUT I did have a lot of fun with it and isn't that the point? :) Here are some pictures of the door:

So there was some store-bought stuff as you can see with the creepy dead guys hanging from the tree and the webbing but I did make some of it myself which I was kind of proud of. Below are my brother's and his girlfriend's gravestones. Clever, no?

I found this little tree in Michael's that actually came in two pieces, meant to be put together to make a 3D tree. Instead I kept it flat and cut out a big yellow moon and glued that behind it and made some little pumpkins to place at the bottom. And then I hung the little dead guys from it.

Now what I was really proud of were my magnetic spiders. (I put magnets on the back of the tree and gravestones as well. It made for REALLY easy cleanup without ruining any paint on the door!) For the spiders I just bought a thing of spider rings, popped off the ring part, and glued magnets to them.

Aren't they creepy?

The magnet spiders held up the webbing pretty well, though I wish I had had more spiders to put in the center of the webbing. Overall it was a fun project! I also need to give credit to James for helping me pick out stuff for the door (those creepy dead guys were a surprise gift for me; yes I am a little macabre). He also helped a lot with the actual placement of everything on the door.

I also finally framed my grandmother's rose cross stitch and I think it turned out great!

Ok so there's this great art studio here in Charlottesville called the Glass Palette where you can go in and make beautiful glass art yourself! You basically just cut glass and arrange it however you want to to make coasters, jewelry, plates, bowls, frames and lots of other things. It's a great place to go when you are feeling creative. Here are some earrings I made there for my mom for Christmas. It is my design but they put it in the kiln for me to melt and fuse it together to get that final look.

They can also melt liquor and wine bottles for you. We got two melted, one for James's mom to use as a candle holder and one for his grandmother to use as a cheese platter.

Here is the glass palette's website:
The mother and daughter who own it are very nice people. Anyway can't wait for Christmas so I can give everyone their gifts!

feelin' crafty

Ok so I decided I really wanted to make something this year for coworkers, friends and family. Luckily I came across a really cute idea to make handsewn birds. The website originally intended them to be for a mobile but I thought they'd make great ornaments. I have made four so far, here are some pictures:

Cute right? Thanks to spoolsewing for the pattern:
Also thanks to www.casasugar.com where I first saw the idea. By the way that's a great website about decorating and DIY stuff.
Ok 4 down...10 more to go....
